Nervous Bluebirds are spot on to beat brave Baglan Dragons in Welsh Cup
FAW Welsh Cup – 2nd Round
Haverfordwest County 0 – Baglan Dragons 0
(Haverfordwest County win 4-1 on penalties)
Haverfordwest County moved into FAW Welsh Cup third round after defeating JD Cymru South outfit Baglan Dragons 4-1 on penalties at the Ogi Bridge Meadow Stadium.
Tony Pennock’s side failed to score in this home tie after 90 minutes - it was combination of some poor finishing by the home outfit, but full credit to Dragons’ goalkeeper Matthew Stanton who somehow managed to keep a clean sheet for 90 minutes after he pulled off a string of top drawer saves.
Midway through the first period, Stanton pulled off an excellent save to deny Bluebirds’ midfielder Tyrese Owen’s well struck 20-yard right footed effort.
In the second period the Bluebirds continued to dominate this tie, substitute Jack Wilson struck a long range free kick which Stanton saved low to his right. The keeper also pulled off a superb double save to deny Wilson from the right as Martell saw his rebound stopped by the keeper.
Late in the game Harri John had a goal bound shot deflected for a corner, from the resultant corner Stanton tipped another goal bound effort over the crossbar.
This tie was finally settled on penalties, Bluebirds’ goalkeeper Zac Jones was once again the hero as the home side won 4-1 with Luke Tabone, Jack Wilson, Martell Taylor-Crossdale and Rhys Abbruzzese who all found the back of the net, it secured a nervous victory for the Welsh Premier outfit against the brave Port Talbot team.
